Luxor Resort & Casino, Resort casino in Paradise, Las Vegas Strip, United States
The Luxor Resort & Casino is a hotel building shaped like a pyramid in Paradise along the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada, whose black glass facade encloses thirty floors. The interior forms a continuous atrium rising to the apex and contains more than two thousand rooms.
Construction started in spring 1992 with the goal of creating an Egyptian-themed venue that opened to its first guests in autumn 1993. The original concept was later scaled back, so many areas now appear more modern than at opening.
The name refers to the ancient Egyptian city on the Nile, whose ruins remain visible today. Many hotel guests enter the building through a replica temple that recalls the monumental architecture along the river.
The hotel stands centrally along the Strip, so many other venues are within walking distance, and a sky bridge connects the building to neighboring complexes. During peak season and weekends, early arrival is advisable because queues at reception and elevators can grow longer.
On the roof, a spotlight made of thirty-nine lamps sends a vertical beam of light into the night sky that remains visible from far away. Pilots often spot the beam while approaching the city and use it as a navigation aid.
