Hexigten Global Geopark

Hexigten Global Geopark is a large protected area in Inner Mongolia displaying granite forests, volcanic landscapes, glacial formations, and desert features. The site divides into eight distinct zones, including the Arshihaty granite forest, Qingshan granite basins, Dali Nur volcanic zone, and Huanggangliang glacial area.

The area received China's National Geopark designation in 2001 and became a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2005. This international recognition transformed it into a significant site for geological research and conservation.

The Xilamulun River valley shows signs of Red Mountain Culture, Grassland Bronze Culture, and ancient Qidan settlements that developed here. Visitors can sense how different peoples adapted to this landscape over many centuries.

The park covers a large area and visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow plenty of time to explore the different zones. Starting early and planning routes ahead is wise since distances between sections can be significant.

The Arshihaty granite forest displays distinctive horizontal segmentation patterns formed by centuries of wind and frost erosion. This natural breakdown created a remarkable maze of columns and crevices that still reveals the geological forces at work.
