Sahtu Region, Administrative region in Northwest Territories, Canada
The Sahtu Region extends across 41,437 square kilometers of northern wilderness, featuring the Mackenzie River, Great Bear Lake, and mountain ranges.
The United States Army developed petroleum resources in the Sahtu Region through the Canol Project during World War II, although operations lasted less than one year.
The five communities of Colville Lake, Deline, Fort Good Hope, Norman Wells, and Tulita maintain strong Indigenous Sahtu Dene and Metis traditions.
Transportation within the region relies primarily on winter and ice roads, as no permanent roads connect the communities to the rest of Canada.
Great Bear Lake, the largest lake entirely within Canada, reaches depths of 500 meters and contains substantial populations of large trout species.
