Canton of Ticino

The territory extends south of the Alps between Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano, featuring mountain ranges, valleys, and Mediterranean vegetation across eight districts.

The region transformed from separate Italian territories conquered by the Swiss Confederation in the 15th century into a unified canton in 1803.

The Italian-speaking canton maintains strong connections to both Swiss and Italian heritage through its architecture, cuisine, and three main cities: Bellinzona, Locarno, and Lugano.

Visitors can access the canton through the Gotthard railway tunnel, connecting the region to northern Switzerland and making it reachable within three hours from Zurich.

The Lepontine Alps shape the northern landscape with peaks reaching 3,402 meters at Rheinwaldhorn, while palm trees grow in the southern Mediterranean climate.
