East, Administrative region in eastern Cameroon
East Region is an administrative division in eastern Cameroon spanning diverse terrain with rolling hills, open grasslands, and forested areas. The territory is organized into four administrative departments, with Bertoua serving as the regional center.
The territory took its present administrative form in 2008 following a presidential restructuring of Cameroon's regional system. This reorganization reflected changes in how the nation managed its territorial divisions.
Different ethnic groups across the region speak their own languages and practice distinct traditions. These customs shape how communities organize daily life, celebrations, and relationships with the land.
Bertoua serves as the main hub for administrative activity and sits at a higher elevation. The four departments spread across the territory, and visitors can move between them by road.
The region has very sparse settlement compared to other parts of Cameroon, giving it a more open feel. This low population density means large stretches of forest and grassland remain largely undisturbed.
