Gansu Wind Farm, Wind power megaproject in Gansu Province, China
The wind farm stretches across 39,000 square kilometers of desert terrain near Jiuquan city, containing more than 7,000 wind turbines for renewable energy production.
Construction of the facility started in 2009 with an initial target of 3,800 megawatts capacity through eighteen 200-megawatt farms and two 100-megawatt installations.
This renewable energy project demonstrates China's commitment to environmental solutions while addressing the industrial development needs of western provinces.
The 2,383-kilometer Jiuquan-Hunan transmission line connects the wind farm to regional power grids, enabling electricity distribution to distant population centers.
Local energy consumption patterns and infrastructure limitations led to periods where nearly half of the generated electricity remained unused during early operational phases.
