Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Performing arts center in Pudong district, Shanghai, China
Shanghai Oriental Art Center is a performing arts facility in Pudong with five connected hemispherical halls that resemble an orchid flower when viewed from above. Inside, it houses a large concert hall, an opera hall, and a smaller music room for chamber performances.
French architect Paul Andreu designed the building, which was constructed starting in 2002 and opened at the end of 2004. The center marked an important milestone for Shanghai's growing international cultural scene.
The name reflects a commitment to showcasing Eastern artistic traditions alongside international performances for diverse audiences. Visitors encounter both classical works and contemporary productions throughout the building's various performance spaces.
The center is located in Pudong's modern financial district and is easily accessible by public transportation. Check the performance schedule in advance since the program changes regularly throughout the year.
The concert hall houses a specially crafted pipe organ built by Austrian organ maker Rieger, which significantly enhances orchestral performances. This instrument is a rare feature in Asian performance venues.
