Mindroling Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Zhanang County, Tibet, China

Mindroling Monastery is a large monastic complex in Zhanang County, Tibet, centered around a three-story main temple with traditional Tibetan architectural design. The site sits within mountain terrain along the Zhanang River and includes multiple buildings for prayer, study, and residential functions.

The monastery was founded in 1676 by the Nyingma master Terdak Lingpa as a significant center for this Buddhist school. Following destruction in 1718, local scholars guided its reconstruction and recovery in the years that followed.

The main hall displays detailed wall paintings showing protective deities and images of revered Nyingma teachers. These artworks serve as visual teachings that visitors can study as they walk through the halls.

The site sits in mountain terrain, so wearing comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing is recommended. Being located at high altitude in a remote region, visitors should prepare for cold conditions and allow time for adjustment to the environment.

The monastery maintains responsibility for calculating and publishing the Tibetan calendar, a role passed down through generations. This function blends astronomical knowledge with Buddhist tradition in a way that many visitors overlook.
