Kau Yi Chau, Uninhabited island in Islands District, Hong Kong
Kau Yi Chau is an uninhabited island in the Islands District of Hong Kong, located between Peng Chau and Green Island. Its southern coastline is defined by steep cliffs, while the interior is hilly and covered in dense vegetation.
The island has long been uninhabited and was never used as a permanent settlement. In 1971, the USS Regulus ran aground near the island during Typhoon Rose, an event that left a mark in local maritime records.
The name comes from Cantonese and means something like 'chair island', referring to the shape of the land as seen from the water. Looking at it from a boat, the outline does resemble a seat.
The island can only be reached by boat and has no tourist facilities on land. Calm weather makes the crossing easier, as sea conditions around these waters can change quickly.
Plans exist to turn the island into a new urban district that would combine green spaces with water channels. If built, this would transform one of the few remaining uninhabited islands close to Hong Kong into a city neighborhood.
