Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum

The Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum is built on Mang Hill and combines underground and above-ground sections with 22 burial sites from various Chinese dynasties. The site spreads across three hectares and gives clear insight into the structure and design of these historical resting places.

The museum was founded in 1987 and houses the tomb of Emperor Xuanwu from the Northern Wei dynasty among its collections. The site documents burial traditions across multiple periods and reveals how royal interments changed through different eras.

The halls display burial items that show how different social groups in China honored their deceased. Visitors can observe how these customs changed across the centuries.

Access is from the north side, roughly 10 kilometers from central Luoyang. Plan enough time to explore both the above-ground and underground sections, as the buried chambers require walking down into deeper levels.

The underground chambers sit about 7 meters below the surface and follow different geometric shapes like circles, squares, hexagons, and octagons. These varied forms may reflect different time periods or the social rank of those buried within.
