Tomb of Bai Juyi

Tomb of Bai Juyi, Tang dynasty poet cemetery in Longmen, China

Description

Bai Juyi's tomb sits on Pipa Peak in the Longmen East Mountain area, marked by a circular earthen mound rising several meters above the ground. The burial site occupies large grounds within the Longmen region and is surrounded by mountain landscape.

History

Bai Juyi lived from 772 to 846 during the Tang Dynasty and was a major literary figure known for his large body of poetry. His role as Governor of Hangzhou and his widespread fame made this location an important memorial place for later generations.

Culture

The burial site is surrounded by monuments from Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, showing how Bai Juyi's poems reached readers across many cultures. Visitors can see today how different countries express their connection to this poet through their own memorial stones.

Practical

The visit is best during drier months, as mountain paths can become slippery when wet. Walking the grounds on foot is most practical since narrow trails wind through the natural terrain.

Did you know?

Japanese donors planted cherry trees near the grave in the 1990s, which bloom each spring and add seasonal color to the grounds. Visitors today appreciate these trees as a visible reminder of the poet's international respect.
