Cheung Ching Estate, Public housing complex in Tsing Yi, Hong Kong.
Cheung Ching Estate is a housing complex on the eastern side of Tsing Yi Island with eight residential towers containing approximately 4,900 units. The buildings combine twin-tower configurations with slab structures, representing different approaches to public housing design.
The estate opened in 1977 as the first major housing development on Tsing Yi Island, marking the shift from a fishing community to an urban settlement. This project set the stage for the island's broader transformation into a residential area.
The name comes from Chinese tradition and refers to evergreen plants, following the local custom of giving residential developments poetic names. This naming style reflects how the community embraces symbolic meanings in everyday life.
The estate has an integrated shopping center with markets, shops, and restaurants, plus direct access to bus routes connecting to major transit stations. The extensive public transportation network makes it easy to reach other parts of the city from this location.
The project pioneered different architectural approaches in Hong Kong's public housing policy, testing various building types in one location. This experimental mix of twin towers and slab structures remains a textbook example of innovative housing concepts from that era.
