Hongfeng reservoir, reservoir in People's Republic of China
Hongfeng Reservoir is the largest artificial lake on the Guizhou Plateau, surrounded by green hills and covering a wide area. The water is very clear and reveals many small islands, while the northern section has numerous small islets and the southern section is known for its caves accessible by boat.
The reservoir was built several decades ago to control flooding and ensure the water supply for the region. Over time, it has evolved from purely practical infrastructure into a popular spot where people escape the busy city life for relaxation.
The reservoir sits near villages of the Miao and Dong ethnic groups, whose traditional houses and clothing are still visible today. These communities shape the area through their festivals, music, and local food, offering visitors a glimpse into how they live their daily lives.
The area offers free electric shuttles that travel along the shore and stop at viewpoints and boat docks, letting you see the area without walking far. Boat rentals, bicycle hire, and hiking trails are available, and it is wise to bring cash since local vendors operate throughout the grounds.
One distinctive mountain resembles a girl's hairpin and divides the South Lake from the Rare Lake, with a natural underwater cave running beneath it that visitors can travel through by boat. The water inside the cave remains still and deep, creating a sense of mystery during the passage.
