Site of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Chongqing

The Site of the Provisional Government is housed in five masonry-timber structures in downtown Chongqing. The buildings contain over 600 artifacts including original furniture, documents, and personal belongings that illustrate daily life and resistance activities during the occupation period.

The Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea operated from this location between 1940 and 1945 as an exile government during Japanese occupation. After Korea's liberation, the leadership returned home, concluding a significant period of coordinated resistance from abroad.

The rooms here reveal how Korean and Chinese leaders worked side by side during wartime. Visitors can see personal letters and photographs that show the close partnership between the two nations during this period.

The museum sits near the Jiefangbei CBD and is accessible by public transportation. Plan enough time to walk through the different rooms and read the detailed information about the exhibits throughout the site.

Kim Gu, a key leader of the movement, composed his farewell letter to Chinese officials and the people while in this building in 1945. The document remains on display and reveals his gratitude for China's support during the fight against occupation.
