Bernkastel-Wittlich, Administrative district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
Bernkastel-Wittlich is an administrative district in Rhineland-Palatinate that spreads between the Moselle River and the Hunsrück mountains. It contains several cities and more than a hundred municipalities with a combined population of over 113,000 residents.
The district was created in 1969 when two separate counties were merged to form a single administrative region. This combination brought together different historical areas into one modern governmental structure.
The region is known for its wine production, especially around Bernkastel-Kues, where Riesling grapes grow on steep valley slopes. This tradition shapes how the land looks and how people live in the area.
Wittlich is the district capital and the main place for administrative services and public facilities. Visitors will find shops, restaurants, and accommodations that make the area easily accessible.
The area contains some of the oldest settlements along the Moselle, with archaeological finds showing Roman presence. The region displays traces of this ancient habitation in many places that remain visible today.
