Maritime Alps, Mountain range in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France and Piedmont-Liguria, Italy

The Maritime Alps form a continuous mountain chain straddling the border between two countries, with peaks reaching over 3,000 meters. The landscape features deep valleys cut by rivers, Alpine meadows, and rocky slopes that drop steeply toward the lowlands on both sides.

For centuries, traders crossed these passes to connect the Mediterranean coast with the Po Valley inland. These routes shaped settlement patterns and economic ties between regions on both sides of the mountains.

The villages scattered across these mountains practice traditional farming and building methods shaped by French and Italian heritage. You can see this blend in the stone houses, terraced fields, and the way locals maintain their customs year after year.

Both countries maintain extensive hiking networks with clearly marked trails connecting valleys and ridges. Weather changes quickly at higher elevations, and many routes require a good fitness level, especially those crossing between the two countries.

The mountains hold an exceptional variety of plant life and protect rare animal populations like ibex and chamois that thrive across the peaks. These creatures are uncommon elsewhere in Europe, making this region special for wildlife watchers.
