Le Petit Pelvoux, Mountain summit in Vallouise-Pelvoux, France.
Le Petit Pelvoux is a mountain summit in the Écrins Alps reaching 3,669 meters (12,038 feet) in elevation. The peak displays steep rock walls and glacial features that give it a distinctive appearance.
The peak formed through tectonic activity that shaped the Dauphiné Alps over millions of years. Glacial erosion during ice ages carved out the features visible on the mountain today.
Local mountaineering groups organize annual climbing expeditions to Le Petit Pelvoux, maintaining traditional Alpine climbing techniques and safety protocols.
Most climbers reach the summit by starting from Refuge du Pelvoux, a mountain shelter located southwest of the peak. An overnight stay at the shelter helps prepare for an early summit attempt the next day.
From this summit, climbers can see two glaciers flowing from opposite sides of the mountain in a single view. Glacier Noir and Glacier Blanc display contrasting characteristics that highlight different glacial processes.
