Sarma cave, Limestone cave in Gagra District, Republic of Abkhazia.
Sarma is a limestone cave in the Arabika range that extends across three levels and descends approximately 1830 meters from the entrance. The system is marked by underground streams and lakes that formed at different depths.
Researchers discovered the system in 1990 when Sergey Shipitsin found a small crevice during an expedition. Later expeditions revealed the depth and complexity of the underground labyrinth.
The cave draws researchers from around the world interested in underground ecosystems and how organisms adapt to extreme conditions. Visitors gain insight into how life survives in complete darkness and isolation.
Access requires specialized caving equipment and permits from local authorities. Visitors should go with experienced guides and take physical preparation seriously.
In the deepest sections of the cave live specialized amphipod species adapted to complete darkness and isolated underground environments. These creatures exist nowhere else in the world.
