Kynrem Falls, Three-tiered waterfall in East Khasi Hills district, India
Kynrem Falls is a three-tiered waterfall in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, located inside Thangkharang Park. The water drops over three separate steps before reaching the ground, forming small pools between each level.
Thangkharang Park, where the falls are found, was established in the late 20th century to protect the surrounding forest. The Khasi people have lived in this part of Meghalaya for generations and have long regarded the waterfall as part of their natural surroundings.
Local Khasi communities gather at the falls for celebrations and meetings that mark important moments in their calendar. The waterfall serves as a natural gathering place woven into their way of life.
The falls are at their strongest during the monsoon months, roughly from June to September, when the water volume is at its highest. The park is accessible from Cherrapunji, and the viewing area near the falls is easy to reach on foot from the park entrance.
The area around Cherrapunji is one of the rainiest places on earth, and this is why the falls carry water even outside the monsoon season. On some days, mist covers the lower part of the falls so thickly that you can hear the water but barely see it.
