Nohkalikai Falls, Plunge waterfall in East Khasi Hills district, India.
Nohkalikai Falls is a waterfall in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya state that descends 340 meters (1115 feet) into a natural basin. The water flows over a single rock face surrounded by thick vegetation and reaches its maximum volume during the monsoon season.
The waterfall received its name from an event long ago when a woman named Ka Likai leaped from this spot. The story has been passed down through generations in the region as an oral tradition.
This site in Meghalaya carries a name from the Khasi language that literally means the leap of Likai. Local communities pass down oral tales about the waters through songs and storytelling gatherings.
The viewing point sits about five kilometers from Cherrapunji and offers a view of the entire drop. The mist season between June and September can obscure visibility, while drier months allow for clearer views.
The pool at the base shifts in color depending on the season, ranging from blue to green to turquoise shades. The color change relates to minerals in the water and sunlight exposure.
