Kalpa, Himachal Pradesh, Mountain village in Kinnaur district, India

Kalpa is a mountain village sitting at 2960 meters elevation with direct views of the Kinnaur Kailash peaks and traditional wooden houses decorated with detailed carved ornaments. The settlement spreads across gentle slopes connected by narrow pathways that wind between residences and small courtyards.

Originally called Chini, this village once served as the administrative center of Kinnaur district until the headquarters moved to Reckong Peo. That shift changed its role but the community continued to develop as a residential settlement.

The Kinnauri people here blend Hindu and Buddhist practices in their daily lives, with temples showing devotion to deities from both faiths. The wooden houses with their carved decorations reflect skills and customs passed down through families.

The village offers various lodging options from basic guesthouses to small hotels with standard amenities. Visitors should plan ahead since some paths are steep and winter snow can affect accessibility throughout the settlement.

Shyam Saran Negi, India's first registered voter, came from this community and helped mark the start of democratic participation in the country. This connection to early voting history draws visitors interested in learning about that turning point.
