Songadh, town in Gujarat state, India
Songadh is a small town in the Indian state of Gujarat, located at the foot of a hill and surrounded by stone quarry areas. The town is made up of two parts: the older Junagam and the larger Navagam, which has a central bus station.
The area was originally under the rule of the Bhil community before the Gaekwad rulers took control around 1719. They built a fort between 1728 and 1729 on a high hill to watch over and defend the region.
The Rokadiya Hanuman temple draws visitors from surrounding villages and is a steady part of daily religious life in town. During Hanuman Jayanti, small processions move through the streets with prayers and singing.
Songadh sits along Highway 6 and can be reached by bus from Surat and surrounding towns. The Navagam bus station is the best starting point for getting oriented in town.
The fort was reportedly built in a very short time, which points to how urgent the defensive need was at the time. Today the site receives few visitors, and those who make the climb often have the old walls entirely to themselves.
