Salal Hydroelectric Power Station, Hydroelectric power station in Reasi district, India
Salal Hydroelectric Power Station harnesses water from the Chenab River through a run-of-river system that generates electricity without large water storage areas. The facility operates six turbines and supplies power to the Northern Grid distribution network.
The project started in 1970 following negotiations with Pakistan and was completed in 1987 after design modifications were made. It represented an important step in India's implementation of a bilateral water agreement.
The facility demonstrates India's achievement in large-scale water engineering and shapes local identity as a major employer and energy source for the region.
The site is located in a hilly area along the river and is best accessed during dry weather. During monsoon season, conditions can change rapidly and spillway gates may be in operation.
During monsoon season, operators regularly open the spillway gates to reduce sediment deposits and naturally cleanse the river. This unusual process shows how a large infrastructure project works alongside natural river cycles.
