Maharana Pratap Inter State Bus Terminus, Inter State Bus Terminal in Delhi, India
Maharana Pratap Inter State Bus Terminus, also known as ISBT Kashmiri Gate, is a large bus station in northern Delhi that serves long-distance routes to many states across India. The complex is organized around several platforms, with ticket counters, waiting areas, and small shops spread across a wide open ground-level layout.
The terminal opened in the 1970s and was one of the first purpose-built inter-state bus stations in India, designed to manage the growing movement of passengers between Delhi and other states. Over the following decades it was expanded and partly updated, though it has kept much of its original layout.
The terminal takes its name from Maharana Pratap, a 16th-century ruler from Rajasthan who became a symbol of resistance in Indian history. Travelers passing through often see his portrait displayed near the entrance, a reminder of why his name was chosen for such a central public place.
The terminal sits close to Kashmiri Gate metro station, which makes it easy to reach from many parts of the city. Arriving with extra time is a good idea, as the site is large and the ticket counters can get crowded during peak travel periods.
This terminal handles buses from states as far as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, meaning some journeys arriving here have lasted through an entire night. Watching the early morning arrivals gives a sense of just how far people travel to reach Delhi by bus.
