Al Khazneh, Monumental tomb in Petra, Jordan

The 40-meter tall sandstone facade features two levels with columns, a pediment, and intricate Hellenistic architectural details carved into the red rock mountain.

Built during the 1st century BCE by Nabataean King Aretas III, this structure marked the entrance to Petra, controlling the lucrative trade routes between Arabia and Mediterranean.

The structure received its Treasury name from local Bedouin tribes who believed pirates had hidden pharaonic treasures inside the rock-carved urn at its summit.

Visitors should arrive before noon to see sunlight illuminate the entire facade, while evening tours offer views of the monument illuminated by thousands of candles.

Recent excavations beneath the Treasury revealed an undisturbed burial chamber containing twelve complete skeletons and funeral artifacts dating back 2,000 years.
