Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary

Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in eastern Cambodia spanning across Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, and Kratie provinces with mountains, grasslands, and water channels. The terrain supports diverse wildlife across multiple habitat types found throughout the region.

The sanctuary was established in 1993 and placed under the management of Cambodia's Ministry of Environment. This action aimed to protect endangered species and their habitats from further decline.

The Phnorng communities living near the sanctuary continue their traditional ways, gathering resins, vines, and medicinal plants from the forest for their daily needs. These practices reflect a deep connection between the people and the land they inhabit.

Visitors can arrange guided tours through ranger-guides available in the area to navigate the terrain safely. Bring sturdy footwear and insect repellent as conditions in the forest can be challenging during certain times.

The area is a crucial refuge for rare bird species including giant ibises, white-shouldered ibises, and several vulture species that have declined significantly across Southeast Asia. These threatened bird populations find protection here from extinction pressures.
