Norrbotten covers 106,012 square kilometers of territory, making it the largest administrative region in Sweden with mountains, forests, and coastal areas.

The county formation occurred on May 21, 1810, incorporating the entire province of Norrbotten and two-thirds of Swedish Lapland into one administrative unit.
