Banská Bystrica Region

The Banská Bystrica Region encompasses 9,455 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, stretching from the Low Tatras in the north to the Hungarian border in the south.

The territorial division underwent multiple transformations since 1949, when Slovakia first introduced the system of administrative regions called kraje for governmental organization.

Within the region's 514 municipalities, inhabitants speak Slovak as the primary language, while Hungarian and Roma communities maintain their distinct traditions in southern areas.

The region divides into 13 districts, with the city of Banská Bystrica serving as the administrative center and providing governmental services to 662,121 residents.

The Čiernohronská forest railway near Čierny Balog operates through dense forests, connecting remote villages across the mountainous landscape.
