Mary Region, Province in southeastern Turkmenistan
Mary Region covers 87,150 square kilometers of territory between the Karakum Desert and Afghanistan, intersected by the Murghab River and Karakum Canal.
The region contains the archaeological remains of ancient Merv, established by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC as Alexandria Margiana.
The Regional Museum in Mary city exhibits local artifacts, traditional textiles, and historical documents that represent the evolving societies of Central Asia.
The province operates extensive natural gas extraction facilities at the Galkynysh Gas Field and maintains substantial cotton production through irrigation systems.
The Mary Regional Library, inaugurated in 2011, features 62 columns supporting a spherical structure designed to house three million books.
