Karakoçan

Karakoçan is an administrative district in Elazığ Province in eastern Turkey. The area combines flat plains with mountainous terrain and is divided into several municipalities.

The district was established in 1936 during Turkey's administrative reorganization. Its creation replaced the older settlement of Bağın in the Peri Su river region.

The district maintains 88 villages across its territory, with a population of 28,436 residents who participate in local governance through municipal structures.

The area is sparsely populated and spread across numerous small settlements. Visitors exploring the region should expect longer travel distances and limited infrastructure.

The region experiences temperature variations from -2.8°C in January to 33.9°C in July, with annual precipitation reaching 624.96 millimeters.
