Adak Island, Military naval base island in Aleutian Islands, United States.
Adak Island is an island in the Andreanof Islands group in Alaska, covering a total area of roughly 274 square miles. The highest point is Mount Moffett at around 3900 feet (1200 meters), surrounded by coastlines and bays facing the North Pacific.
The island served during the Second World War as a key base for operations in the Pacific and hosted a large number of soldiers. After the war ended, the military presence gradually decreased until the base was closed.
The name comes from the Aleut language and refers to a place in the western part of the island chain. Residents today use a small settlement with a school and post office, while most of the land remains uninhabited.
Flights from Anchorage reach the island twice a week, while a handful of lodging options are available for travelers. Weather conditions can delay arrival, so flexible travel plans should be considered.
Two volcanoes shape the landscape, while several thousand reindeer live on the island. These animals were introduced decades ago and now roam freely over large areas.
