Lavanttal Alps, Mountain range in central Eastern Alps, Austria
The Lavanttal Alps form a mountain range spanning the border region between Styria and Carinthia in Austria. The landscape features forested slopes in the valleys, rocky peaks above the tree line, and steep passages carved by water and weather.
The range took its name from the Lavant Valley that runs along its eastern side. Geologists later separated it from the larger Noric Alps and recognized it as its own distinct formation.
The mountains shape how people in nearby valleys live and work seasonally. Herders move livestock to higher pastures in summer, and local food traditions rely on what the alpine landscape provides throughout the year.
The area has a network of marked trails for hikers of different abilities. Conditions are best in warmer months when the routes are snow-free and weather is more stable.
The Saualpe section on the western edge has its own distinct geology and appearance. This area sits between two mountain passes and shows different rock types and plant life compared to the rest of the range.
