Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link Hong Kong section, High-speed railway line in West Kowloon, Hong Kong
The Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link Hong Kong section is an underground high-speed rail segment in Hong Kong running from West Kowloon Station through a 26 km (16 mile) tunnel into mainland China. Trains reach speeds of up to 350 km/h (217 mph) during the journey and connect the city to the national high-speed rail network.
Construction of this rail connection began in 2010 and took eight years to complete before opening in September 2018. The project marked a major step in integrating Hong Kong into mainland China's transportation network.
The railway opening ceremony featured performances by the Hong Kong String Orchestra, highlighting the connection between Hong Kong and mainland Chinese cultural traditions.
The journey from West Kowloon to Guangzhou South takes around 46 minutes with several daily departures throughout the day. Passengers must pass through border controls and security checks at the station, so allow extra time before departure.
The entire route runs underground, so passengers do not see any scenery during the trip. The tunnel system was necessary to pass through densely built areas of Hong Kong without disrupting activity above ground.
