White Horse Pagoda, Dunhuang

The White Horse Pagoda stands 12 meters tall with nine levels, constructed from adobe bricks and featuring an octagonal foundation measuring 7 meters in width.

Built in 386 AD during the Former Qin dynasty, the pagoda marks the burial site of Buddhist monk Kumarajiva's horse that transported sacred texts along the Silk Road.

The pagoda represents the relationship between Buddhist monks and their animal companions, marking an important point for religious travelers through ancient China.

Located 2 kilometers southwest of Dunhuang city center, visitors can reach the pagoda by taxi or bicycle with transportation costs around 5 RMB.

The structure combines architectural elements across multiple floors, including lotus petal decorations and wind bells that create sounds in the desert breeze.
