Jinnan, Shopping and dining district in Shibuya, Japan
Jinnan is a shopping and entertainment district in Shibuya that stretches from Park Street to Fire Street and contains a high concentration of fashion-focused stores. The area also houses major broadcasting facilities and the NHK Studio Park with modern exhibition spaces.
The district received its name in 1928 based on its southern position relative to Meiji Jingu Shrine, though the official pronunciation shifted in 1963. This change marked the area's transformation as it modernized and became an urban gathering place.
The name reflects the area's position south of Meiji Jingu Shrine, and it has grown into a hub where young people gather to discover the newest fashion and pop culture trends. The concentration of shops and studios here shapes how the district feels and functions as a meeting place.
The area is easily accessed from the Hachiko Exit of Shibuya Station and offers direct access to shops and facilities. A walk along Fire Street takes you to the nearby Harajuku area in about 20 minutes.
The Yoyogi National Gymnasium, designed by architect Kenzo Tange, stands at the center of the area and hosted a major sports event with an innovative suspended roof design. This architectural work remains a landmark of modern Japanese sports facilities.
