Mantua Swamp

Mantua Swamp is a protected wetland in Ohio that spans approximately 285 acres with distinct zones including swamp forest, boreal bog, and cattail marshes. These varied habitats create conditions where different plant and animal communities thrive together across the landscape.

The site earned National Natural Landmark designation in 1976 and received state nature preserve status in 1990. These two recognitions marked important milestones in protecting this wetland ecosystem.

Local environmental organizations conduct research programs and monitor twenty-four different state-listed plant species within the preserve boundaries.

Visitors must obtain a permit from the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves before entering the protected grounds. Planning ahead for this requirement ensures a smooth visit to the site.

Researchers discovered a breeding population of brush-tipped emerald dragonfly in 2000, marking the first record of this species in Ohio. This finding made the preserve an important location for this rare dragonfly.
