Mui Ne Sand dunes, Sand dunes in Mui Ne, Vietnam.
The Mui Ne Sand dunes consist of two distinct formations that span the coastal area: red dunes near town and white dunes located about 26 kilometers north by Hong Lam hamlet. Each formation has its own character, with contrasting colors and shapes that make them visually different landscapes.
These dunes formed over centuries as coastal winds carried sand from the beach inland, creating large sand formations through a gradual natural process. The wind-driven accumulation shaped the landscape into what visitors see today.
Local fishermen use traditional round boats called coracles that you can see near the dunes in the early morning hours as they go about their daily work. This age-old fishing practice shapes the rhythm of the coast and keeps the community connected to the water.
The best time to visit is between November and March when the weather is most pleasant and conditions are ideal for exploring. Reaching the dunes from Ho Chi Minh City takes about 4 hours by bus.
This location receives around 2,460 hours of sunshine annually, significantly more than the neighboring city of Phan Thiet. This dry climate creates a special microclimate that gives the dunes their distinctive appearance.
