Kuala Lumpur Tower, Communication tower in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur Tower rises 421 meters above the city, housing an observation deck at 276 meters and telecommunications equipment throughout. The structure combines a slender shaft with a broad viewing level topped by an antenna spire.
Construction started on October 1, 1991, with the final antenna installed on September 13, 1994, before opening in 1996. The structure held the title of tallest in Malaysia for three years until the Petronas Twin Towers were completed.
The structure serves as an Islamic falak observatory where specialists watch for the crescent moon to mark the beginning of religious months. This role connects modern infrastructure with religious practices that shape the rhythm of local life.
Four elevators carry visitors up fifteen floors to reach the observation deck, which offers views across the entire capital. The deck provides a full circle of sightlines and works best during clear weather.
The location on Bukit Nanas hill adds extra meters to the total height, lifting the structure even higher above the cityscape. The hill itself holds one of the last patches of primary rainforest within the city limits.
