Forward Operating Base Salerno, Military base and airfield near Khost, Afghanistan
Forward Operating Base Salerno was a military installation near Khost with an airfield and extensive infrastructure built to support thousands of personnel. The facility housed a combat hospital, aircraft hangars, maintenance buildings, and areas for training military operations.
Construction began in October 2002 when engineer units of the 82nd Airborne Division started building the installation. The base operated as a key center for regional military operations until 2013.
Military personnel from different U.S. branches collaborated with Afghan forces and civilian contractors in conducting regional security operations from 2002 to 2013.
The airfield could handle large transport aircraft and provided direct access to mountain passes in the surrounding area. This location made it possible to reach operational zones quickly from the base.
The base took its name from a 1943 operation in Salerno, Italy, where paratroopers conducted combat jumps. This naming honored a significant moment from World War II history.
