Caviahue - Copahue Municipality, human settlement in Argentina
Caviahue-Copahue Municipality is a small settlement in Neuquén Province consisting of two towns nestled in the mountains of Argentina. The area features pristine lakes, ancient araucaria forests, an active volcano, and natural hot springs used for thermal baths.
The area was known to indigenous peoples for centuries who used the hot springs for healing purposes. In recent decades it developed into a destination for health tourism and winter sports, with a ski center established to serve visitors.
The name Caviahue comes from Mapuche language and means "blue water", referring to the lakes in the area. Local people maintain their connection to nature and use the place for traditional activities like hiking and enjoying the hot springs throughout the year.
Access is mainly via Route 26 which is paved, followed by a dirt road that is often snow-covered in winter. Visitors should bring suitable clothing for fluctuating temperatures at high elevation and check road conditions before traveling during icy or snowy weather.
Volcano Copahue emits steam and fumaroles that create a striking sight in the mountain landscape and make the area's geothermal activity visible. This volcanic presence shapes a landscape that seems to come from another planet with its otherworldly appearance.
