Cine Tauro, Movie theater in Lima District, Peru
Cine Tauro is a modern movie theater in Lima featuring an asymmetrical facade with a prominent central window and a colorful mural across its exterior. The building houses three commercial levels alongside a basement theater section and an upper mezzanine with additional seating.
Construction of the building began in 1957 under architect Walter Weberhofer and it opened as a cinema in 1960. It emerged at a time when movie theaters were central to urban entertainment across the city.
The cinema served as a major gathering place for entertainment across Lima, drawing visitors from different neighborhoods. It shaped leisure habits for several generations and remains personally meaningful to many residents.
The building spans multiple levels combining cinema operations with commercial spaces, so visitors should be aware of the different floors when navigating the complex. The theater sections are distributed between basement and upper levels, which may affect ease of access depending on the viewing area.
The original design for the site was far more ambitious than what was eventually built, with plans initially calling for a ten-story tower. Only the cinema section and three commercial levels were completed, representing a significant shift from the architects initial vision.
