Sexi District, Administrative district in Santa Cruz Province, Peru
Sexi District is an administrative district in Santa Cruz Province, in the northern highlands of Peru. The terrain is made up of steep Andean slopes, narrow valleys, and high plateaus that shape daily life and movement through the area.
The district was created in 1942 as one of the eleven administrative units of Santa Cruz Province. Before that, the area was home to Andean communities that had settled in the mountain highlands over many generations.
The district capital displays fossils from the nearby petrified forest in its local museum, reflecting how residents connect with the deep geological story of their landscape.
The district is accessible from Chiclayo by regional bus, though the mountain roads can be slow and require patience. The altitude is high enough to affect some visitors, so it is worth taking time to adjust before moving around too much.
The district is home to a petrified forest where ancient plant remains have turned to stone over millions of years. These fossilized trunks and fragments are visible in the landscape, offering a rare look at what once grew in this part of the Andes.
