Chota Province, Administrative province in Cajamarca, Peru
Chota Province is an administrative area in the Cajamarca Region that spreads across mountains and valleys at an elevation of about 2,388 meters. The territory comprises nineteen districts connected through different geographic zones.
The area was home to several Pre-Columbian cultures, including the Chavín, Wari, and Moche, whose settlements left traces over centuries. These early communities established the cultural foundation of the region.
The San Juan Bautista festival draws people from across the nineteen districts who gather for traditional dances and local competitions that reflect the region's identity. These celebrations give residents a chance to showcase crafts and pass down customs through generations.
The area is reachable by regular bus services from larger cities like Chiclayo and Cajamarca, with the main highway PE-3N serving as the key route. Visitors should prepare for mountainous terrain and changing weather depending on elevation.
The Plaza de Toros El Vizcaino, one of the country's largest bullrings, draws international matadors during the June festivities and defines the celebration. This impressive structure shows how much weight traditional spectacles carry in regional identity.
