Tinogasta, human settlement in Argentina
Tinogasta is a town in northwestern Argentina located in the Abaucán river valley in Catamarca Province. It sits on a high elevation surrounded by mountains, with the main road connecting eastward to Córdoba and westward toward Chile through a high mountain pass.
Tinogasta developed as an important stopping point for travelers and traders moving across the region. The town was once connected by a railway from La Rioja that was part of the General Belgrano network but stopped operating in the 1970s.
The town is easily accessible via the main RN 60 highway and serves as a base for exploring surrounding villages and natural attractions. The climate is dry and sunny year-round with hot summers reaching the 40s Celsius and cool winters with temperatures sometimes dropping below freezing at night.
The region is a hub for air sports such as paragliding and hang gliding, supported by strong winds and clear skies that attract adventure seekers from around the world. The surrounding area features more than ten tall volcanoes and snow-capped peaks, including Mount Pissis, one of the tallest volcanoes in the world.
