Campo de Piedra Pómez, Protected natural area in Antofagasta de la Sierra, Argentina.
Campo de Piedra Pómez is a protected natural area in Catamarca province featuring expansive pumice stone formations across high-altitude terrain. The landscape displays pale-colored rock formations scattered across several kilometers of high plateau.
The pumice stone formations emerged about 100,000 years ago through volcanic activity from a nearby volcano. This geological process created the distinctive pale rock landscape visible today.
The protected area includes three designated trails leading from El Peñón, Carachipampa, and Las Papas, allowing visitors to explore the natural stone formations.
The best time to visit is outside the rainy season when trails are drier and easier to walk. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the high plateau offers little shade and the sun is intense.
Thousands of individual pumice formations create a natural maze-like pattern across the plateau that looks completely different depending on the time of day. The pale stones reflect light intensely and produce an almost moon-like landscape, especially at sunset.
