El Loa Province

Located in northern Chile, El Loa Province extends across 41,999 square kilometers of desert terrain at an elevation of 3,925 meters.

The province received its name from the Loa River, which flows through the region and supported indigenous Atacameño settlements for thousands of years.

The province maintains strong connections to its mining heritage through festivals and celebrations in Calama, while preserving Atacameño traditions in San Pedro.

Regular bus services connect the three main communes of Calama, Ollagüe, and San Pedro de Atacama, with Calama serving as the transportation hub.

The province contains the Chuquicamata mine, which produces 385,000 tons of copper annually and reaches depths of nearly 1,000 meters.
