Puritama Hot Springs, thermal bath of Salar de Atacama
Puritama Hot Springs is a thermal site located in a canyon about 30 kilometers north of San Pedro de Atacama, with natural pools fed by water flowing from underground sources. The water remains between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius and contains minerals including calcium, magnesium, sodium, and boron, while wooden footbridges and changing rooms provide basic access to the pools.
The springs held importance for the Incas and other indigenous communities in ancient times due to their healing properties. Local communities traditionally visited the site for its therapeutic benefits, and today it is managed by Hotel Explora with support from local authorities while maintaining its historical role as a place of healing.
Puritama means warm water in the local indigenous language and held deep significance for the communities who lived here. The site remains a place where visitors come to experience the connection between natural healing and the landscape. The simple wooden bridges and basic facilities show how the location maintains its natural character while welcoming modern visitors.
The site sits at an elevation above 3300 meters, so visitors should drink plenty of water and give their body time to adjust. Lockers, restrooms, and a small cafeteria are available on-site, but you need to bring your own padlock for lockers and having cash is useful for local transactions.
Architect German del Sol designed a walkway that runs along the river near the springs in a simple style that blends with the landscape. The pathway helps visitors reach the pools while enjoying natural views and demonstrates how the site balances modern access with the wild canyon setting.
