Pairique Chico, village in Jujuy, Argentina

Pairique Chico is a small village set high in the mountains of Jujuy Province at an elevation above 4,300 meters (14,100 feet). Simple houses built with local materials blend into the rocky surroundings, and the residents mainly engage in small-scale farming and animal herding on the sparse land.

The region has been shaped by several earthquakes, notably a strong tremor in 1863 measuring 6.4 that caused significant damage and led to stricter building standards. An even more powerful event struck in 1948 with a magnitude of 7.0, destroying many structures and leaving lasting marks on the landscape.

The village is a place where community life centers on shared gatherings in open spaces, where residents come together to exchange stories and work. Music and dance play an important role during local celebrations, reflecting traditions that remain central to daily life.

Getting here requires traveling through rough mountain roads, so come prepared for bumpy terrain. Services are basic with limited accommodations and supplies, so it is wise to bring essentials, especially if you plan to stay overnight or explore further into the mountains.

The area is known for its strong seismic activity with visible ground cracks left by past earthquakes still visible today. These geological marks remind visitors daily of nature's power and make the region geologically compelling to explore.
