Palacio de Sal, hotel built of salt blocks in Bolivia
Palacio de Sal is a hotel made from salt blocks near the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, about 25 kilometers from the town of Uyuni. The structure uses locally sourced salt for walls, ceilings, and even furniture, with wooden elements providing stability and giving the building its distinctive appearance.
The hotel was developed to take advantage of the region's natural resources and became the world's first salt hotel. Over time it has evolved into a symbol of innovative architecture, demonstrating how local materials can be transformed into functional and extraordinary structures.
The name reflects both the building material and the location: Palacio means palace and Sal means salt. The hotel represents how the region's salt mining traditions have been transformed into a place where visitors experience the landscape that defines local life.
The hotel is about 25 kilometers from the town of Uyuni and requires travel by private taxi or organized transfer arrangement. Roads are unpaved and dusty, so expect a longer drive and bring warm clothing for the altitude of over 12000 feet (3600 meters).
The salt walls, ceilings, and even beds create a surreal environment that feels like living inside a salt sculpture. After sunset, visitors can observe stars from the observation deck where the altitude provides an unusually clear view of the night sky.
