East Sepik Province

East Sepik Province is a region in Papua New Guinea's Momase area, marked by rainforests, mountains, coastal zones, and the extensive Sepik River system. These natural features shape the landscape and form the main pathways connecting settlements throughout the territory.

European exploration of the region began in the late 1880s and reshaped trade networks and led to the establishment of administrative centers along the river. These early contacts transformed settlement patterns and economic connections over the decades that followed.

River communities along the Sepik maintain ancestral practices and create intricate wood carvings that play central roles in their daily social life. These traditions reflect how people here organize celebrations, gatherings, and connections to their land.

The main way to reach the province is by air through Wewak airport. From there, river boats and limited road routes provide access to communities throughout the region.

The Sepik River experiences seasonal water level shifts of up to 5 meters, which profoundly shape the ecosystem and daily rhythms of riverside communities. These flood cycles determine where people settle and how they plan their activities.
